Petition for East Sea

This legislation was introduced by Senator Tony Avella in the State Senate as S6599D. This legislation was passed on May 6th, 2014. A9703 is its counterpart in the State Assembly.

I am writing to make you aware and gain your support for an important legislation being considered in the New York State Assembly this term.

The legislation in concern is A9703 sponsored by Assemblyman Edward Braunstein. Its counterpart in the Senate, S6599D, has been passed on May 6th, 2014.

This is an act to amend the education law in relation to requiring all textbooks to reference the Sea of Japan as also the East Sea. The dispute on the naming of the body of water between Korea and Japan has been on-going since the end of the Japanese occupation of the Korean peninsula. In regards to this issue, there is a growing international movement to recognize both names as acceptable. Not only that, this legislation aims to increase knowledge and understanding in the students about global issues and help to create dialogue among the pupils.

This is an issue that I hold dear to my heart. As your constituent and a resident of the State of New York, I sincerely request that you support this legislation to teach our schoolchildren about the East Sea.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
